INTERNATIONAL CLASS 22

GENERAL SCOPE OF CLASS 22:            Ropes, string, nets, tents, awnings, tarpaulins, sails, sacks and bags (not included in other classes); padding and stuffing materials (except of rubber or plastics); raw fibrous textile materials.

 

 

1.      SEARCHING:

Related goods:

 

Due to its broad scope, many goods outside of Class 22 may be related to Class 22 goods.  For example, sails in Class 22 may be related to sailboats in Class 12 and sailboards in Class 28.

 

Many Class 22 storage bags are related to other bags in Classes 16 and 18.  Tents in Class 22 may be related to camping gear or sleeping bags in Class 20, and Class 11 portable gas stoves and lanterns

 

2. IDENTIFICATION ISSUES:

 

Some general wording allowed in Class 22.  The following wording is acceptable:

 


·        Animal hair

·        Awnings

·        Baling twine

·        Brattice cloth

·        Body bags

·        Canvas tarpaulins

·        Commercial fishing nets

·        Cordage

·        Down feathers for use as stuffing

·        Fiberfill

·        Garment bags for storage

·        Hammocks

·        Jute

·        Marine sails and sail handling systems comprising lines and fittings sold as a unit

·        Padding materials not of rubber or plastic

·        Ramie fibers

·        Ropes

·        Seaweed for stuffing

·        Straps for securing bundles

·        Tents

·        Yarn fibers

 

Indefinite and unacceptable wording includes the following:

·        Bags (some storage bags are in Class 22, but tote bags, handbags and similar bags are in Class 18, while merchandise bags and bags for domestic or household use, such as grocery bags, trash bags, sandwich bags are in Class 16 regardless of material composition)

·        Covers (unfitted covers for swimming pools and vehicles are in Class 22, but unfitted fabric furniture covers are in Class 24; fitted or semi-fitted covers are generally classified in the class with the goods that the cover is fitted to, e.g. fitted vehicle covers are in Class 12 because vehicles are in Class 12)

·        Raw fibers, including fibers for making yarns, are classified in Class 22, however, yarns made from raw fibers are in Class 23.  NOT ALL FIBERS ARE IN CLASS 22.
